Tesla wants to open its supercharger network to other automakers by the end of 2021. The supercharger is the largest fast-charging network in the world. The charging capacity of the Tesla Superchargers is also to be increased to up to 300 kW.
Tesla is leading the way
Tesla triggered the e-mobility boom and continues to dominate it today. This pioneering role forced the company to develop a scalable system of «electric filling stations» right from the start. Tesla had to rely on in-house development because a provider of the necessary infrastructure simply did not exist. With its own charging system, Tesla is not just a car manufacturer, but a comprehensive e-mobility provider. Now Tesla wants to open its supercharger network by the end of 2021. Will we have Tesla supercharger for all?
Also a head start in reliability
The fact that Tesla also wants to open its charging stations for other e-car brands is confirmed by a tweet from Elon Musk on July 20, 2021: «We created our own connector, as there was no standard back then & Tesla was the only maker of long-range electric cars. It’s one fairly slim connector for both low & high power charging. That said, we’re making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year.» The move is greeted with enthusiasm by the e-mobility community. Many e-car drivers are annoyed by the inadequacies of other charging providers. The reliability and speed of the Tesla charging network, on the other hand, have been confirmed many times and may also play a certain role when purchasing an e-car.
A wise decision by Elon Musk
There may be speculation about the “Tesla supercharger for all” strategy. In the long run, the decision is wise: the supercharging system will expand at an accelerated rate, Tesla will generate another source of income, the development of e-mobility will be supported and Tesla’s pioneering role will be further consolidated. A plus for the brand that should not be underestimated considering the race to catch up with competitors who started a little late.
