Seven rules you should follow to maximize battery life
There are a few rules you should follow if you want to maximize battery life.
Let’s start with your charging habits:
- Optimize range and battery lifetime
Try to use your vehicle with state of charge between 20 and 80 percent. Except for emergencies or traveling. - Charge slow, take it easy
Although technology is heading towards short-time and always faster charging, limit the use of these chargers. For daily use, it is recommended to charge at 11Kw while sleeping or working. This will make the battery last and perform longer. - Charge and shop
It makes sense to use the time spent shopping to charge your e-car. Try using slower chargers. - Better safe than sorry
Always charge in a well-ventilated areas that are free of chemicals or explosive material. Charging equipment is made for all-weather, nevertheless try to have dry hands – it’s electricity after all! - Safe infrastructure
When charging, always make sure to use certified equipment (TÜV, CE) at home, that the cables are in perfect shape (not kinked or even defective) and avoid self-made installations. - Long term parking and battery discharge
Batteries do not like extreme temperatures. If you are leaving your electric vehicle standing for an extended period of time, leave it with a state of battery between 50% and 80%. Best, as you would do for any vehicle, is a parking place protected from sun and extreme heat or cold. - Good charging habits
When it come to charging your electric vehicle, develop the same charging habits as for your smartphone. Plug it in when you come home, take it off the network when you leave. As easy as that. - Bonus Tips
Set a timer: When charging at home over night, if you vehicle allows it, set the timer to charge the e-car during low rate periods.
Just in case: when not using your e-car for extended periods of time, leave it unplugged.
Take it easy: In general, the slower you charge, the better for the battery.
